Ceremony for Laying of Foundation stone of ENT Hospital Project
The ENT Hospital has been functioning in an old, wooden and rock structure dating back to the colonial period. The building has been in decrepit, deplorable state, with leakage from the roof.
The putting up of a new ENT Hospital was announced in the budget speech of 2016/2017. Out of a financial assistance envelope of US$ 500M from the Government of India, it is important to highlight that Government of India has agreed to extend assistance for implementation of the ENT Hospital Project.
The ENT Hospital will be put up on the existing site with an approximate extent of 2 Arpents (or 11,145.5 m²). The overall built-up surface area will be 12,498 m². It will be a new block with basement, ground floor plus two storeyed complexes. Essential logistics comprising air-conditioning, lighting/ electrical control system, fire safety protection device, digital computer server, industrial high capacity kitchen catering facility will be strategically installed at basement. Outpatient service consisting of reception, waiting area, treatment, well-equipped Operation Theatre, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and well-furnished wards to facilitate recovery will be located at the remaining floors.

It will be a fully computerized, specialised hospital operating a range of ENT services covering ear, nose, throat, oral surgery, periodontic, orthodontic, cochlear implant, audiometry and speech therapy to alleviate suffering of patients.
Work on this project has started as from 15 January, 2018. It will be a project of 15-month duration. The laying of foundation ceremony has been performed by His Excellency Shri Ram Nath Kovind, President of India, the Hon. Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and Dr Hon. Anwar Husnoo, Minister of Health and Quality of Life on 13 March, 2018 in the context of the 50th Anniversary of the Independence of Mauritius.
The project is expected to be completed by April 2019 and the hospital will evolve into a Regional Reference Centre for ENT Specialised Care and Treatment.
