The World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated on 07 April every year.
In 1948, the World Health Organisation (WHO) held the first World Health Assembly. The World Health Assembly decided to celebrate on
07 April each year with effect from 1950 as the World Health Day. The World Health Day assumes a new dimension this year as it marks the 70th Anniversary of decreeing World Health Day.
At least half of the world's people are currently unable to obtain health service. Almost 100 million people are being pushed into extreme poverty due to unaffordable health service.
The theme chosen to observe World Health Day is particularly pertinent, 'Universal Health Coverage (UHC): Everyone, Everywhere.' It implies everyone, everywhere can access quality health service where and when they need them. It is considered that no one should get sick or die on account being poor. Health is deemed to a human right. Nobody has to be denied health service.
Mauritius is one of the few countries which subscribes to the concept of Universal Health Coverage with the principle of free health service through public health facility.
The Health Service has been decentralized into 5 health zones. An extensive network of 118 Community Health Centres (CHCs) and 18 Area Health Centre (AHCs) generates health service to diverse regions of the country. It is believed access to health service need not depend on who you are or where you live. It is important to devise means to extend equitable health care to make sure everyone can get health care where they need.
Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is a powerful concept with the underlying undertakings:-
Ø Inspire – elaboration of policy to transform health service
Ø Motivate – share experience to make progress towards Universal Health Coverage
Ø Guide – to provide tool for advancement of Universal Health Coverage
World Health Day is an opportunity how progress can be made to improve health, how everyone can take a hand to improve health. It can start with yourself, your immediate vicinity, your community. It is the chance to spread the news about health. How each and everyone can adopt means, come up with creative and constructive measure, how you and with concerted dedicated commitment it may be possible to improve health.
